Class D mobile powder extinguishers are suitable as part of the equipment in plants where light alkali metals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium or its alloys with aluminium are handled. This is because excessively high temperatures are generated during combustion and it is therefore necessary to use a special dry extinguishing agent or specially treated powder for extinguishing.

WHAT METALS CAN BE EXTINGUISHED WITH THESE EXTINGUISHERS?
These special extinguishers can extinguish fires of light metals and their alloys such as alkali metals in the form of lithium, sodium, potassium. Alkaline earth metals e.g. barium, calcium, strontium. Light metal alloys e.g. uranium, zirconium and organometallic compounds.
Metal fires are challenging and are much more difficult and longer to extinguish than other fires. Harmful metal fires can reach temperatures of up to 2000°C. The high temperature results in the decomposition of water into hydrogen and oxygen. For this reason, this type of fire cannot be extinguished with water as there would be a high risk of explosion. Similarly, carbon dioxide, foam, water extinguishers cannot be used for extinguishing as they could cause a dangerous chemical reaction and cause burns that are difficult to treat.
To avoid agitating burning metal shavings, extinguishing powder must be applied gently. To extinguish the fire, a sufficient layer of powder must be formed over the fire to be somewhat airtight. The powder then forms a thick molten crust due to the high temperature. In order to prevent re-ignition and to extinguish the fire safely, the layer of metallic extinguishing powder or molten crust must isolate the metal from oxygen for a long time.
