Extinguishing lithium batteries
EXTINGUISHING LITHIUM BATTERIES?
No problem, we are expanding our range of fire extinguishers with special extinguishers developed specifically for extinguishing lithium batteries. The extinguishing agent is an aqueous mineral solution - AVD.
AND WHAT IS THE EXTINGUISHING AGENT MADE OF?
AVD is an aqueous dispersion of chemically exfoliated vermiculite. It is applied to lithium battery fires as a mist to extinguish them and prevent further spread. Vermiculite is the name of a group of hydrated laminar silicates of aluminum, iron and magnesium. It consists of thin, flat flakes containing microscopic layers of water. Chemical exfoliation of vermiculite produces microscopic, single platelets that are freely suspended in water. This produces a stable aqueous dispersion of vermiculite which is used as a fire extinguishing agent for lithium batteries.
HOW DOES AVD WORK?
The vermiculite particles in the mist deposit on the surface of the burning fuel and form a film. The film dries instantly, and as the particles of the high aspect ratio plates overlap and combine, a non-flammable oxygen barrier is formed between the fuel and the atmosphere. This process has a cooling effect on the fuel source and when the water content of the AVD evaporates, the vermiculite platelets begin to accumulate and the fire is brought under control.
Lithium battery extinguishers are EN3 certified and available in several sizes. All can be conveniently purchased in our e-shop.
